History

Among the strongest and most famous Chess Olympiads ever was held in Havana in 1966. Among those representing their nations were World Champions Petrosian, Tal, Fischer, and Spassky, as well as legendary Grandmasters Stein, Korchnoi, Portisch, Najdorf, Larsen, Hort, Uhlmann, Pachman, Benko, Szabo, Panno, and Pomar. The land of Capablanca hosted a chess extravaganza seldom, if ever matched. “The whole country is a chessboard,” wrote a Cuban paper. Just for the event the Cuban hosts had special sets and tables made. Inspired by traditional Jaques pattern sets, the 1966 Havana set, in the words of one authority, was a “magnificent beauty, of a perfect balance of chess pieces like few in the History of Chess.”

At the close of the Olympiad, the sets, boards, and tables were awarded to the participants. Few have survived intact, and they are incredibly rare. With the help of chess collector Chuck Grau, we are happy to offer our exacting reproduction of this magnificent set.
