Quality and Choice

Chess Sets for Players, Collectors and Gifts

Chess sets crafted from fine hardwoods combine attractive presentation, durability and comfortable playability. Choose from classic economy Staunton tournament sets, refined wooden sets for the home and luxury collector editions inspired by important historical designs.

Whether you are a serious player, a collector or searching for a timeless gift, our carefully curated selection offers quality, character and lasting enjoyment. Each design reflects the heritage of traditional chess while remaining practical for modern play.

Our Heritage

The Staunton Chess Tradition

At Official Staunton , we celebrate the enduring legacy of the original 1849 Staunton chess design associated with John Jaques of London.

Its recognisable profiles and practical proportions helped the Staunton pattern become the accepted standard for organised chess and remain central to modern chess-set design.

Materials

Natural Woods and Refined Finishes

Our wooden chess sets feature materials including ebony, rosewood, acacia and boxwood, alongside economy boards produced with carefully applied veneers and lithographic finishes.

Natural variations in colour, grain and tone form part of the individual character of real wood and help make each chess set distinctive.

Playing Quality

Balance, Weight and Handling

Many of our chess pieces are weighted, felted and carefully finished to provide stable handling and an enjoyable, substantial feel during play.

Traditional proportions provide clear piece recognition, while suitable base diameters and weighting help create a comfortable playing experience.

Chessboards

Boards Selected to Complement the Pieces

We pair our chessmen with wooden chessboards crafted from materials including walnut, maple, mahogany and anegre.

Appropriate square sizes, clear contrast and durable finishes help produce combinations suitable for regular play and permanent display.
