Pantograph Technology and Formation Cutters
The knight is the most expressive and technically demanding piece within a Staunton chess set. Small differences in the shape of the head, jaw, ears, mane and neck can substantially alter the character of a historic reproduction.
Official Staunton has employed pantograph technology in the creation of specialist formation cutters used to reproduce established knight profiles with a high degree of consistency.
A carefully prepared master form guides the formation of the cutter. This allows important design characteristics to be transferred with greater accuracy before the individual knight receives its final carving and hand-finishing.
Pantograph-assisted formation does not remove the artisan from the process. It creates a consistent foundation from which detailed carving, refinement and finishing can take place.
