    Vintage Staunton Chess Sets

    Welcome to the Vintage Staunton Chess Sets collection at the Official Staunton Chess Company, featuring carefully produced reproductions inspired by the celebrated Jaques of London Staunton designs of the mid-19th century.

    The Staunton chess set, first introduced in 1849 and endorsed by Howard Staunton, transformed the game by establishing a design that combined elegance, balance and practical playability. These pieces became the recognised standard for serious chess and remain the most important chess design in the world today.

    ```
    Our vintage reproduction sets are created to honour this historic legacy. From 1849-style Staunton chessmen to early 1850s London pattern reproductions, each set is designed to capture the character, proportions and presence of the original antique chessmen while offering the reliability and usability expected from a modern handcrafted set.
    Many pieces are made using premium materials such as boxwood, ebony and rosewood, paired with carefully selected chessboards in traditional veneers including walnut, mahogany and maple.
    Historic Inspiration
    Our designs take inspiration from original 19th-century Staunton patterns, including 1849 and 1850-style chessmen associated with the early Jaques tradition.
    Faithful Reproduction
    Each reproduction is created with close attention to proportion, balance, knight profile, finish and overall historical character.
    Collector Appeal
    These sets are ideal for collectors, enthusiasts and players who appreciate the heritage of the Staunton pattern and the beauty of vintage chess design.
    Traditional Manufacturing Techniques
    ```

    Our reproduction chessmen are produced using a combination of established woodworking methods, traditional pantograph duplication and skilled hand finishing. This allows historic knight designs to be reproduced with consistency and accuracy while preserving the individual character associated with finely made chessmen.

    Pantograph duplication is a long-established technique used within quality woodcarving and chess-piece manufacture. It establishes the initial form of the knight from a master pattern before the piece is individually detailed, sanded and finished by experienced craftsmen.

    1

    Historic Pattern Reference

    The original design is studied for proportion, profile, balance and visual character.

    2

    Pantograph Formation

    The initial knight profile is formed using traditional pantograph duplication from a master pattern.

    3

    Hand Detailing

    Craftsmen refine, sand and finish the knight by hand to complete the final character of the piece.

    4

    Final Finishing

    The pieces are polished, weighted, baize felted and inspected before being matched into complete sets.

    1849 Staunton Reproductions

    Inspired by the earliest Staunton designs, these sets celebrate the form that changed chess history.

    1850 London Chessmen

    Complete Vintage Sets

    Many of our chessmen can be paired with traditional boards and boxes to create complete display and playing sets.
