We are delighted to offer a truly exceptional and characterful chess set: the Early Anderssen Drop Jaw Chessmen, Tournament Size, circa 1858. Crafted from premium boxwood and ebony, this set has been purposefully designed to capture the charm and soul of a bygone era. Each piece is finished with a beautifully mottled patina, echoing the wear and warmth of a cherished set from the golden age of chess.

Every chessman is carefully weighted and felted to provide a smooth and balanced playing experience. The King is engraved with the distinctive “1858 Staunton” marking on its base—an emblem of authenticity and craftsmanship. The King-side Rooks and Knights are further distinguished with the iconic crown stamp, symbolising their elevated role on the board.

Inspired by the great Adolph Anderssen and faithfully modelled after the sets documented in the esteemed Camaratta Codex, this reproduction is steeped in historical detail. The drop-jaw Knights are particularly expressive, showcasing the signature carving style that defined Anderssen's era. The Bishops feature wide vertical mitres, adding to the classic 19th-century aesthetic.

The King stands at an impressive 3.5 inches tall, with a base diameter of 1.75 inches. This complete 34-piece set includes two additional queens for effortless pawn promotion.

To complement the antique finish, the set is presented with a luxurious mahogany hinged-lid chess box for secure and stylish storage. Additionally, a large 20-inch distressed antiqued chessboard is included, perfectly harmonising with the timeworn character of the pieces and completing the ensemble with a bold, elegant touch.
