Inspired by the Original Staunton Tradition
The Old English chessmen take their inspiration from the traditional Staunton pattern, the design that has come to define the appearance of serious chess for generations.
The familiar silhouettes of the king, queen, bishop, knight, rook and pawn give the set an unmistakably traditional character. Rather than following passing fashions, these pieces celebrate the proportions and styling that have made Staunton chessmen an enduring part of the game's history.
A Substantial 3.75-Inch Playing Set
At the centre of the set stands a commanding 3.75-inch (9.5 cm) king. This generous size gives the chessmen real presence on the board while retaining the practicality required for comfortable regular play.
Each piece is weighted to improve stability and provide a reassuring feel in the hand. The bases are finished with baize felt, allowing the chessmen to move smoothly across the board while helping to protect its playing surface.
19-Inch Mahogany & Maple Chessboard
The chessmen are paired with a handsome 19-inch Mahogany & Maple chessboard, creating a beautifully balanced combination in both scale and appearance.
The warm Mahogany tones and contrasting Maple squares provide an elegant setting for the black and natural chess pieces. With the complete set arranged for play, the result is substantial enough to become a permanent feature of a study, living room or dedicated games room.
Four Queens for Modern Play
The set contains 34 chessmen, including an additional queen for each side. Having four queens available means that when a pawn is promoted, the correct additional queen is immediately ready for use.
It is a small but important practical detail, particularly for serious players who do not want to substitute an overturned rook or another piece during a game.
Traditional Chess with a Striking Presence
This is a chess set intended to be enjoyed both as a playing set and as part of the room in which it sits. The dark Old English chessmen, substantial proportions and warm Mahogany board combine to create a distinctly traditional appearance.
Whether used for regular games, serious study or simply left ready for the next match, it offers the familiar character of Staunton chess in a generously proportioned and visually impressive format.
Complete with Storage Box
When the game is finished, the chessmen can be kept together in the supplied vinyl storage box, providing a straightforward and practical way to store the complete 34-piece set.
The Old English Black & Mahogany Chess Set brings together classic Staunton inspiration, substantial weighted chessmen and a traditional 19-inch wooden board in one complete playing combination.
